BACKGROUND:
Unfold is a space-saving storage shelf concept born from the idea of redesigning and repurposing old office furniture. When Bærum Municipality moved to a new office, they sought a clever solution for their old furniture. We transformed discarded filing cabinets into versatile shelves that can be folded away when not in use, addressing the temporary storage needs in small spaces.
Our goal was to create six modules that could function together seamlessly. Prioritizing the use of metal for its ease of processing and recyclability and durability. Unfold’s purpose and aim is to free up floor space, provide flexible storage solutions, be intuitive, easy to clean, and simple to assemble and maintain.
GOAL:
To give old office furniture new life that brings value to people in Bærum Municipality.

PROCESS:
We made visits to various public institutions, such as Veste Hauger Housing and Night Shelter, performing sequence analyses and staff interviews. Following the visits, we engaged in creative exercises like idea generation and sketch sessions, aiming to counteract any potential negative associations with the spaces. After creating different concepts and mockups, we had peers and users test the different solutions.
