BACKGROUND
Our project aim was to create a meaninful object for a specific community: bird watchers. Bird watching involves observation using binoculars or the naked eye, often also identifying birds by their distinct songs.
The Earlybird Mug draws inspiration from the egg’s shape. In line with bird watchers tracking birds through seasons, we incorporated a draft pattern symbolizing birds’ return in spring and departure in fall. We learned bird watchers often have a favourite bird, we therefore integrated the pattern to foster a personal connection to the product.
GOAL:
to design a meaningful and personalized item with a positive impact for bird watchers.
Duration:
4 weeks, Spring 2018

PROCESS & RESEARCH METHODS
We immersed ourselves in the bird-watching community in Oslo, attended meetups, joined several local Facebook groups, conducted interviews with ornithologists.
We observed how the online groups were utilized, noted the discussions, and analyzed the content to gain insights. We developed four distinct personas to understand the diverse bird watcher profiles.
RESEARCH METHODS
We gathered further insights through interviews, participation, observation, and a survey. Interviews provided valuable information, observation revealed how bird watching unfolds, and the survey validated our initial assumptions. We learned about the time commitment, dominant age groups, and how individuals discovered bird watching.
PROTOTYPE
The EarlyBird Mug takes its inspiration from the shape of an egg, symbolizing new life, a concept cherished by bird watchers who have a deep appreciation for nature. The cup's thickness ensures a comfortable weight, stability, and a pleasant sipping experience. Its size and shape encourage users to hold it with both hands, enhancing the morning ritual.
Bird watchers closely follow the movements of birds throughout the seasons. To honor this, we incorporated a draft pattern, symbolizing the birds' return in spring and departure in fall. Each bird watcher has their favorite bird, which we've integrated into the pattern, fostering a personal connection to the product.
